The Gift
I remember the days we both
would leave,
To enjoy a long weekend's reprieve.
The steam from the truck smells sweet as honey,
It's embedded in my childhood memory.
We'd walk at night when we could drive no farther,
I felt no fear as I followed my father.
When I tired, he carried my load,
Never complaining as we splashed down the road
The cabin's in view, what a beautiful sight.
Once inside, the fire he would light.
We'd sit for hours, not a word spoken.
Our love feels strong in the silence unbroken.
You taught me the grace and peace of the wild,
you taught me respect when I was only a child.
I thank the Lord for giving me you,
And for the gift you gave, I thank you too.
The gift you've given is greater than gold,
More precious than any gift I could hold.
I love you Dad for the gift you see,
Is you've shown me the father I want to be.
